Name : Colin Statton

Job Title: Field Officer / Business Development Officer

Employment / Qualification Back Ground:Colin

Certificate II in Automotive Administration – Service Reception, Certificate III Automotive Technician, Certificate IV Training and Assessment, Diploma of Management, Refrigerant Handling Licence (Automotive Air-conditioning), Work Health and Safety Construction (White Card), Working with Vulnerable People.

During my working life I have covered most aspects of the Automotive Industry starting as an apprentice in a service station all the way to service advisor in a large dealership.

I was working with the NRMA doing roadside servicing and repairing vehicles etc, after a number of years within the Automotive Industry I had a change and started with a training company as an Automotive Trainer, within a short period of time I was appointed the head trainer role. With this role I was in charge of the Automotive delivery to On the Job Training and also Class Room Based training. While also doing this role I was introduced to the GTO aspects with apprentices and quickly was appointed the Manager of the GTO arm of the business as well. Over a number of years I was then appointed Assistant Manager across the whole business encompassing RTO,GTO and Apprentice Centre.

Favourite thing about your Job:

I enjoy the time I spend with the apprentices / trainees watching them grow from not knowing all that much about their relevant industries to becoming qualified. I enjoy being a part of the passion the apprentices and trainees have and being able to help them achieve their goals throughout there training lives whether they are experiencing good or not so good times.

Guiding the apprentices and trainees through their qualification and keeping in contact once they possibly setting up their own business or even gaining another qualification is very rewarding experience.

What are you looking forward to in the next 12 months?

Building the number of apprentices and trainees within the area of my role. Meeting the Host employers and spending that time helping, mentoring and ensuring they are working towards their dream job / roles.

What makes you get out of bed every morning and come to work?

My Wife and Kids!!!

Being able to help the trainees / apprentices or even the host employers that I work with on a day to day basis.

Something interesting about you:

After being an Automotive Technician for so many years, I still enjoy working on cars and modifying cars. This is something that has stayed with me the whole way from a first year apprentice to be able to modify cars and attend car shows and make them go fast. I always seem to be doing up various cars either of my own or friends vehicle from Street Cars, Show Cars and even a Drag Car.

Favourite holiday destination:

I have seen most of Australia and recommend spending the time to see our own Backyard as they say. I have been to Thailand and thoroughly enjoyed that time and the experience. I would like to see some other countries as well.

When I was younger I wanted to be ……

I have always played with tools, pulling things apart and putting them back together so I suppose I have reached that dream of being a Mechanic!!
