Profile – Apprentice shopfitters, Antonio Scrive & Carmelo Pollincina

This month we are profiling the trade Shopfitting and two of our apprentices who are hosted with Hettich Australia – Antonino Scriva who is almost a 4th-year apprentice and Carmelo Pollicina who is a 2nd-year apprentice.

Shopfitters use plans and specifications to build and install shopfronts and retail store shelves, counters, exhibition stands, kitchens and bathrooms, office fixtures and partitions. Like cabinetmakers, shopfitters learn how to properly use and operate power machinery and a variety of hand tools and work with a variety of building materials.

Both Antonino and Carmelo wanted to be shopfitters because they love working with wood. “At Hettich, we are always doing something different from vanities, laundry units, office fit outs, kitchens and working with the latest LED lighting. I’m always learning something new and Hettich is at the forefront of design and innovation” said Antonino.

“I love this trade and working at Hettich is providing me with fantastic opportunities. I also travel interstate with Hettich to set up our exhibitions as well which is a great experience” said Carmelo.

Brendan Farrugia who supervises both the apprentices at Hettich Australia says “both Antonino and Carmelo are at an above average level in their trade. As a company at the forefront of this industry, the apprenticeship process works well for us. It strengthens the calibre of tradesmen in our industry which benefits business and the consumer. We are very pleased with the progress both these young apprentices are making.”

Shopfitting is a four-year apprenticeship and once completed you will graduate with a Certificate III Off-Site Construction (Shopfitting) nationally recognised qualification.
