Apprenticeships still a good deal
Despite record high university enrolments, the apprenticeship pathway is still a good deal for those who choose this path. Two recent LSAY (Longitudinal Surveys of Australian Youth) reports support this as well.
In relation to pay and status upon completion, Dr Karmel said: “For young men, going down the apprenticeship pathway after completing Year 12 leads to the best-predicted pay at age 25.” This report also found that those who chose not to complete year 12 were in a higher status job by age 25. Another report found that completing an apprenticeship is associated with an increase of more than 20 per cent in weekly earnings.
So if you have been considering an apprenticeship and worried about wages, keep the bigger picture in mind. It’s proven to pay off long term.
