Career Pathways

This course is most commonly used as a pathway into a career as an Electrician, Sparky or Lift Mechanic.

Successful graduates of the course will receive the nationally recognised Certificate III Electrotechnology Electrician, a certificate that is an essential requirement under Fair Trading NSW to be eligible for applying for an Electrician’s Licence in order to become a qualified electrician. In tandem with the certificate, the electrician apprenticeship component also provides the practical knowledge and experience required to apply.

In addition to these roles, this certificate gives you transferable skills that may be able to be used in other roles in these industries: telecommunications, manufacturing and construction.

Become an Electrotechnology Electrician Apprentice

You must become employed as an apprentice electrician to complete the uee30820 Certificate III in Electrotechnology Electrician. 

Alternatively, you can take this certificate without an apprenticeship, but you must already be employed and working under the supervision of a licensed electrician and be given a broad range of electrical work. 

As a Group Training Organisation, 1300apprentice looks after the training costs, mentoring and support and offers you assistance in connecting to a host employer to undertake an electrical apprenticeship that gives you the skills, practical knowledge and experience you need to complete your Certificate 3 in electrotechnology.

This will also give you the three years of necessary electrical experience for an electrician license, so that you can apply for one in NSW, Victoria and Queensland.

Overview: Cert 3 Electrotechnology

Electrotechnology is the field of study that follows how electricity functions within and outside electrical systems. The course will show you how to select, install, set up, test faults, find, repair and maintain electrical systems and equipment in buildings and premises.

The Certificate III in Electrotechnology Electrician can be taken through TAFE or an RTO. 

This pathway combines practical and theoretical training to equip students with a well-rounded skill set necessary to conduct unsupervised work as a licensed electrician for residential, commercial and industrial buildings.

You can choose to work on the theoretical part of your Cert 3 electrotechnology online or in person.

Entry Requirements 

Prior to enrollment you must:

  • Be over the age of 15
  • Able to work at heights
  • Able to distinguish the differences between colours
  • Language, literacy and numeracy to Year 10 high school level

Recognition of Prior Learning

If you have previous experience working with a licensed electrician, you can apply for Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL). On request, you will receive an assessment to prove your experience, skills and knowledge that can go towards meeting your qualification requirements. Gaining approval for RPL may mean that you can bypass certain topics in your course to progress faster in the certificate. 

Credit Transfer

TAFE or RTO students may also be able to transfer credit from previously undertaken courses to advance their progress in the course.
