Australian Apprenticeship Incentive System 2027
Changes to Australian Apprenticeships Incentive System from 1 January 2027: What Employers Need to Know
The Australian Government has announced major changes to the Australian Apprenticeships Incentive System from 1 January 2027, with support set to focus more heavily on apprentices and small to medium businesses.
The reforms are designed to better target industries facing skills shortages, particularly in housing construction, clean energy and other priority sectors. Under the new system, many employer incentives will only be available to businesses with fewer than 200 employees, while large employers will generally no longer qualify unless operating as a Group Training Organisation (GTO).
Changes will also include updates to the Australian Apprenticeships Priority List, meaning employers may need to reassess workforce plans, recruitment strategies and future apprenticeship pathways. Incentive payments under the Key Apprenticeship Program are expected to reduce from up to $5,000 to $4,000 for eligible SME employers from 2027, while Priority Hiring Incentives for SMEs will remain available up to $2,500.
While 2027 may feel a long way off, businesses that start planning now will be in the strongest position to maximise available support and secure future talent before the changes take effect.
