At 34 years old, Josh is a proud father, motorcycle enthusiast, and Factory Manager at a successful roller shutter company. But his career path hasn’t always been straightforward. Like many others navigating their future after school, Josh’s journey is a testament to persistence, adaptability, and the power of vocational training.

Josh’s interest in cars and bikes initially led him to start a light vehicle mechanic apprenticeship after high school. However, by his third year, he realised the trade wasn’t the right fit. Still, he completed his TAFE studies, keeping the door open for future opportunities.

Reflecting on a piece of advice from his high school metalwork teacher, Josh turned his attention to the metal fabrication industry. That decision marked a pivotal turning point. After beginning his fabrication apprenticeship at a small workshop, he faced an unexpected challenge when the business shut down. But rather than give up, Josh connected with 1300apprentice, who helped place him with the roller shutter company he’s now been with for over a decade.

Determined to make the most of his new opportunity, Josh not only completed his Certificate III in Boilermaker/Fabrication, but also took night classes in CAD drawing and fitting and machining, eventually earning Certificate IV qualifications. His dedication and skill led him from apprentice to tradesman, then to leading hand — and today, he manages a team of over 20 staff.

Josh’s story doesn’t just highlight personal success — it underscores the ripple effect of quality training and mentorship. Since completing his apprenticeship, he has given back by training and supporting the next generation of apprentices.

“I was fortunate to have people believe in me along the way,” Josh shares.
“Now I try to do the same for others.”
