Why Host an Apprentice or Trainee?
Hiring an apprentice can help your business build skills from the ground up. Instead of competing only for already-qualified tradespeople, you can train someone in your systems, standards and way of working.
Employers choose to hire apprentices because it can help them:
- Build a future workforce: Apprentices learn your trade, your processes and your expectations from the beginning.
- Support skills development: Apprenticeships combine practical workplace experience with formal training through a TAFE or Registered Training Organisation.
- Reduce employment administration: When you host through 1300apprentice, we manage key employment processes such as wages, superannuation, allowances, training coordination and performance monitoring.
- Access support throughout the placement: Your Apprentice & Trainee Officer can help monitor progress, support communication and assist if issues arise.
- Explore available incentives: Employers may be eligible for Australian Government incentives or state-based payroll tax rebates or exemptions, depending on the apprentice, qualification, location and current eligibility rules.

How Apprentice & Trainee Management Works with 1300apprentice
When you hire an apprentice through 1300apprentice, you are a host employer, not the legal employer. We carry the employment obligations, and you provide the on-the-job training and supervision.
Here is how the process works:
- Tell Us What You NeedContact our employer team and let us know the trade, the location, and the type of candidate you are looking for. We will discuss your business needs, project timelines, and any specific requirements.
- We Recruit and Screen CandidatesWe advertise the role, screen applicants, and shortlist candidates based on your criteria. You meet them, and you choose who works on your site.
- We Employ the ApprenticeOnce you have selected a candidate, we sign them up as our employee. We handle the training contract, wages, superannuation, leave entitlements, workers compensation, and all employment paperwork.
- They Work on Your SiteThe apprentice works at your business under your supervision. They learn your trade, your standards, and your way of working. We coordinate their TAFE attendance so it fits around your schedule.

What You Provide as a Host Employer
Hosting an apprentice through 1300apprentice is straightforward. Your responsibilities are:
- Provide meaningful work in the apprentice’s chosen trade
- Supervise the apprentice and provide on-the-job training
- Maintain a safe working environment
- Release the apprentice for TAFE attendance (typically one day per week)
- Communicate with your 1300apprentice field officer about progress and any concerns
You do not handle payroll, insurance, leave administration, or training contracts.
What 1300apprentice Manages for Host Employers
As the legal employer, we take care of everything that would normally sit on your desk:
- Recruitment and candidate screening
- Employment contracts and training agreements
- Wages, superannuation, and leave entitlements
- Workers compensation and insurance
- TAFE and RTO coordination
- Performance monitoring and mentoring
- If the apprentice is not the right fit, we manage the transition and find a replacement
You provide the work, the supervision, and the on-the-job training. We handle everything else.
Flexible Hosting Arrangements
One of the biggest advantages of using 1300apprentice is flexibility. Unlike a direct apprenticeship, you are not locked into a four-year commitment with one employee.
- Short-term placements: Host an apprentice for the duration of a project
- Long-term placements: Keep the same apprentice for the full three to four years
- View to permanency: If the apprentice is a good fit, you can offer them a permanent role after their apprenticeship
- Multiple apprentices: Host several apprentices across different trades at the same time
- Seasonal work: Use apprentice labour during peak periods without long-term employment risk
